Council tax benefits

Council tax benefit helps towards the cost of council tax for people who are on a low income.

Who can claim?
Anyone who has to pay council tax for their home can claim. If council tax is included in your rent then you should claim Housing Benefit, which will cover the council tax as well.

You can claim Council Tax Benefit if you have less than 16,000 savings. You do not have to be out of work to claim Council Tax Benefit.

How much will I be entitled to?
If you are on Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance Income Based you will normally get full benefit, unless you have someone over the age of 18 living with you. For people who are not on Income Support the amount of benefit you will receive depends upon: how much your council tax bill is; your net income; household circumstances and any savings or investments you may have.
