Our Commitment to Equalities

The equalities agenda, key equalities issues and policies

South Bedfordshire District Council is committed to equal opportunities. We are actively working to eliminate discrimination, to promote equal opportunities and good relations between people from different groups.

We are committed to providing equality of access to our services for all our residents and other people visiting and working in this district and to recruiting a workforce that is representative of the population it serves.

The council’s mission is: “To work with the communities of South Bedfordshire to improve their quality of life and secure a range of responsive and valued services”.   This vision can only be achieved by developing strong, secure, self-reliant and self-confident communities, free from unlawful discrimination.   We aim to continuously improve our services and provide effective local government in this district by putting our communities first and working with our customers and local organisations.

South Bedfordshire District Council works closely with community groups, the voluntary sector through our Equalities Forum and with our contractors and those working on behalf of the council.  In striving to improve the quality of life and secure a range of responsive and valued services for the people of South Bedfordshire, the Council engages and consults with the community on how well we are performing and what we can do to improve our services.

As an employer SBDC aims to make sure its workforce reflects the community it seeks to serve. We believe all employees are unique, and should be valued for the ideas, creativity, commitment and skills they bring to their work.

As an Equal Opportunities employer South Bedfordshire District Council has a legal obligation to adhere to current legislation and also develop Best Practice.

Our equalities work is to ensure that:

  • Employees and customers are treated with dignity and fairness.
  • People's culture, beliefs and backgrounds to be respected and welcomed.
  • Good practice is shared across the council.
