Council wants Community Views (02/06/06)
The draft Joint Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) sets out how and when the councils will involve residents, landowners and other stakeholders in decisions that will affect them. A recent government drive to make communities more sustainable means that the views of local people will be at the heart of planning process, as they know what will work best in their area.
A formal six-week consultation period kicks off on Monday 12 June until Monday 24 July at 5pm, and both councils would like views and comments on the contents of the draft SCI. Comments can be made by phone, in writing; by letter, fax and email, or by filling out the comments form on line. A copy of this form is also available from your local library.
The SCI will be available to view at all local libraries, Town Council offices and at the offices of South Beds District Council, Luton Borough Council and Bedfordshire County Council during normal office hours. It will also be available to view online at www.luton.gov.uk or accessible via web link from www.southbeds.gov.uk. If you do not have access to the Internet, this service is provided free at all libraries in South Bedfordshire and Luton (for Luton this is free for the first half an hour then a charge applies) provided you are a member.
The Community Involvement Officer at the District Council, Sara Kennedy said: "The SCI is important as it defines how we will involve communities and get feedback on planning issues from local people. Ultimately, planning shapes the future of the landscape, housing, transport provision, education, recreation and other facilities in your area. We want to involve as many people as possible so please do comment and don't miss out on the chance to have your views heard."
This consultation will be for the second stage submission draft of the SCI and involves a wider public consultation than the first stage draft that ended in November 2005.
