Grove interior takes centre stage (20/10/06)

Construction of Dunstable’s new Grove Theatre has entered its final and most exciting phase. With less than seven months to go before opening night, the focus is now on fitting out the interior of the theatre, including the installation of some of the most up to date and specialist technical theatre equipment available.

The stage is close to completion and specialist contractors are now installing a counterweight flying system into the space above the stage called the fly tower, which will allow scenery to be moved and stored vertically high above the stage. The fly tower, which is two and a half times the height of the stage opening, will hold lighting and stage cloths as well as scenery, enabling efficient scene changes during performances and the proper storage of staging fixtures between productions, also potentially enabling the theatre to run different shows at the same time.

A hydraulic floor is also being fitted as part of the orchestra pit, which will enable technicians to lower or raise the pit to create a larger stage area depending on the type of production that is on.

The auditorium is taking shape quite literally too. The balcony and box seating areas have been built, curving around the auditorium to create a very intimate atmosphere for performers. Contractors will soon fit the 782 seats; of which 320 will be retractable stalls seating to create a flat floor auditorium space for events such as rock concerts. High up on cat walks, in the roof above the auditorium, the front of house lighting gallery has also been installed and theatre lights and follow spots to be fitted in the next few weeks.

Executive Member for the project at South Bedfordshire District Council, Councillor David McVicar said: "Only a few months ago, this building arose as an empty shell. Now its beginning to look like the modern, state of the art theatre that we promised the residents of South Bedfordshire, and on time and within budget. Over the next seven months, everyone will be working hard to complete and open what will be one of the districts most celebrated buildings."

The theatres dressing rooms and green room are also being fitted out ready to receive some top performers. The fitting out of the bar and box office areas, conveniences, projection and control rooms are also well under way. Leisure Connection, who will manage the theatre on behalf of South Bedfordshire District Council, will announce the first seasons programme just before Christmas. The opening season will offer a diverse mix of shows including musicals, drama, opera and comedy and promises to provide something to suit all tastes.
