The not so Sweet Sound of Summer (25/07/06)

South Bedfordshire District Councils Environmental Services Enforcement Team has urged residents to be aware of the effect noise may be having on their neighbours while entertaining during the hot weather.

Complaints about noise almost doubled this summer compared to last year. The exceptionally hot weather means that more people are leaving their windows and doors open and are doing more entertaining in their gardens, sometimes causing a nuisance to their neighbours.

Figures for last June were half those of June 2006 and with July not yet over the Enforcement Team are exceptionally busy dealing with the complaints and queries. Since May this year officers have dealt with 86 complaints as compared with 53 for the same period in 2005.

Councillor Brian Spurr executive portfolio holder for the environment has appealed to the public to be extra sensitive during the hot spell. "We need to be more aware of the effect our entertaining and noise can have on our neighbours. This is especially important during the summer when we are living more outdoor lives. If we all do this then the summer months and holidays will definitely be more enjoyable for everyone."

Environmental Health Officers recommend keeping your windows closed and curtains drawn if possible while the temperature outside is higher during the day and then opening them for the cooler evening air. Older people and children should drink more water than usual even if they do not feel thirsty.

If anyone does have a problem with noise or other nuisance behaviour then they can contact the Enforcement Team at South Bedfordshire District Council on 01582 474031.
