SBDC holds conference for rural communities
The first South Bedfordshire Rural Conference took place at Whipsnade Wild Animal Park last weekend (17 March 2007).
52 delegates represented rural communities from 17 different parishes who were able to discuss with South Bedfordshire District Council members and officers the issues that affect them in their communities and how in partnership, the quality of life in rural areas can be improved.
Keynote speaker at the event Councillor Tom Nicols Executive Portfolio Holder for Planning and Rural Management said: “It’s been both an enjoyable and informative event and it’s really pleasant to meet so many friends; as indeed they are, from the rural environment. I expect that we will hold the same event next year and I look forward to seeing these councillors and rural representatives again.”
On the table for discussion were items such as:
- The environment – including green space infrastructure
- Access to services, shops, post offices, community transport
- Crime and safety
- Leisure and young people
Along with officers and councillors from South Bedfordshire District Council being available, other partners represented included: Bedfordshire Police, Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity (BRCC), Bedfordshire Rural Affairs Forum (BRAF), Greensand Trust, Inland Drainage Board, Theatre in the Villages and Volunteer Centre South Bedfordshire
Jane Moakes, Corporate Service Manager (Community and Leisure) at South Bedfordshire District Council added: “It’s been a great opportunity for people to share good practice and ideas to help the district move forward.”
South Bedfordshire District Council is committed to working with rural and other partners to achieve sustainable development and a cleaner and more valued district. The rural communities play a vital part in achieving this.
