Real Nappies On Show For All To See
This year’s campaign highlights how parents can help combat climate change and reduce landfill by using Real Nappies. The recycling team have therefore hired the council's showcase window on West Street, Dunstable to display real nappies and the benefits of using them.
South Bedfordshire District Council's Recycling Officer Ali Hines says: "The modern day Real Nappy comes in a wide range of styles to choose from so parents can select the best type for their baby and individual circumstances. Each baby will go through up to 5,000 nappy changes by the time they are potty trained. If a baby were to wear disposables that would equate to approximately one tonne of nappies thrown away into landfill every year, the equivalent of two baby elephants."
Ali adds: "The tough, hard, boil to get them clean, terry cloth products most people think of when you say real nappies simply do not exist anymore. Today's real nappies are extremely soft, very well designed with buttons or Velcro instead of safety pins and they can be washed in your machine at 40 degrees"
The recycling team are also hosting a number of events across the district during the week to show mums and dads the alternatives to disposable nappies.
