Get Your Community Some Cash

South Bedfordshire District Council is helping communities in the Downside, Tithe Farm and Parkside areas beat the credit crunch and get hold of some cash!

Grants of between £100 and £1,000 are available to community groups, who are active in these areas, to contribute towards one or more of the following objectives:

- learning, skills and volunteering
- information and communications
- investing in young people
- healthy living
- creative and active communities
- safer communities

And amongst the things the grants can be used for are computers and ICT equipment, stationery, one-off events (lunch, coach trips, Christmas parties), equipment and small repairs/improvements.

The scheme has a bit of a twist, though in the fact that who gets the grants is decided not by the council but by a panel of residents from the three areas.

Donna Wilkinson is South Bedfordshire District Council's Economic Development Officer: "Last year this exciting scheme really took off and engaged with the target communities. Twelve community groups with projects ranging from fun days and coach outings, to laptops for a pre-school group and camping equipment for the scouts were awarded cash. This year we hope to support even more community groups and I would encourage any group active in Downside, Tithe Farm or Parkside to consider applying for a slice of the funding".

The closing date for applications is Tuesday, November 11 2008. Application forms and guidelines are available from Donna Wilkinson on 0845 849 6291 or donna.wilkinson@southbeds.gov.uk.
