Councils act on decision on Central Bedfordshire unitary

On 22 February 2008 the High Court heard Bedfordshire County Council's arguments against the Secretary of State's original decision to grant Bedford Borough Council unitary status and thereby create a new, separate all-purpose council for the Mid and South areas of the county. On 4 April Sir Robin Auld found against the County Council. It will not appeal.

The two-volume bid submitted to the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) in December 2007 can be viewed here. After an eight-week government consultation of communities in Bedfordshire, DCLG approved the bid and Parliament voted through the relevant legislation on 27 March 2008.
