Stray Dog Seizure Service

In accordance with the Councils duties under The Environmental Protection Act 1990 - Section 149 - Control of Dogs, we operate a Stray Dog Retrieval Service, to pick up stray dogs reported to us during normal working hours. Normal working hours are 8:45 am until 5:15 pm, Monday to Thursday and 8:45 am to 4:45 pm on Friday.

If a stray dog is picked up which has identification in the form of a microchip or a collar and tag we will always attempt to reunite the owner and dog as soon as possible. If this is not possible the dog will be taken to our kennels where it will be held for a maximum period of eight days, during which time the owner may reclaim their pet upon payment of the statutory £25.00 fine and any kennelling fees that have accrued. On the second offence for allowing a dog to stray it will automatically be taken direct to the kennels.

If you wish to report a stray dog during normal working hours please contact Environmental Services on 0845 849 6113

We do not operate an out of hours Stray Dog Collection Service.

Since 1st April 2008 the police ceased to be responsible for taking in stray dogs brought in by members of the public out of hours.  South Beds District Council have now taken over that responsibility by providing an Out of Hours Stray Dog Reception Service at Appledown Kennels.  Contact details:

Appledown Boarding Kennels & Cattery, Harling Road, Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire  LU6 1QY

Telephone no.  01525 220383

If a member of the public wishes to take a stray dog they have found direct to Appledown out of hours it is essential that they telephone the kennels first on this number so that the kennels may prepare for the reception of the dog.
