Residents' Parking Schemes
Some residential areas simply don't have enough parking spaces. Often there is nothing that can be done, because the problem is just too many cars and not enough space. Sometimes, the problem may be because the area is near a town centre or railway station, and space may be taken by commuters or visitors and so on. In some areas, there are residents' parking schemes to help reduce this problem.
The overall aim of permit schemes is to develop and encourage sensible and safe parking, ease congestion, improve road safety and traffic flow by the provision of parking spaces for the residents.
The Council may issue permits to allow residents to park in specially designated places in areas that are otherwise restricted or prohibited. Permits are only valid in the zone for which they are issued and parking is not permitted in bays that the resident would not normally be allow to use e.g. disabled bays, doctor's bays, taxi ranks or in yellow line restricted areas. Permit schemes take into consideration the need for residents to be able to park near to their home (if this is possible). However, the availability of parking places is finite and the Council cannot guarantee an applicant a parking place outside or near his/her property or, indeed, at all.
Applications may be made to the Parking Services by post, telephone or downloaded from the link below website. Faxed application forms are acceptable. Applications should be received at least 5 working days before the required date.
How do these schemes work?
Residents may buy a permit for their area. Generally, the cost of the permit simply covers the cost of the scheme.People who do not have a permit can only park there for a limited time.
Who qualifies for a resident permit
Residents living in one of the streets listed below who keep and use a car,van with a height restriction not exceeding 2.28 meters on a full time basis will normally qualify for a permit.
What the permit allows you to do
The permit will let you park in any parking spaces which exempt the resident permit holders from the time limit. These spaces will be signed with this or a similar plate. If there are no free bays the permit does not exempt you from parking on a Double or Single Yellow Line.

If you would like the street you live in to be included in the residential zone then please contact Bedfordshire County Coucil the highways authority who are responsible for the implementation of resident parking scheme. South Bedfordshire District Council is only responsible fot the administration of the scheme.
Your duties as a permit holder
It is your duties to ensure:
- Your permit is valid
- your permit has not expired
- That the vehicle registration number is correct
- Your permit is used in accordance with the condition of issue

A permit maybe withdrawn or invalidated if:
- It is found that a permit is not being used in accordance these guidelines
- It is that a person is no longer eligible to hold a permit
- The permit is altered or defaced in anyway or passed to unauthorised users
