The Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Record Service
The Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Record Service (or The Bedfordshire Record Office, as it was formerly known) is managed by Bedfordshire County Council in partnership with Luton Borough Council.
Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service exists to:
- Collect and preserve a comprehensive archive for the historic county of Bedfordshire, including Luton, and including contemporary records of archival value;
- Facilitate public and community access to records by producing finding aids and active promotion of the use of archives for business, educational, cultural and recreational purposes.
The service operates from the Riverside Building, next to County Hall in Bedford. The service is a treasure house containing the written evidence (archives) of Bedfordshire and Luton. The records held enable anyone to: find out about people from all walks of life; find our about local buildings and trade; research their family history and/or community and physical environment. The research material consists of million of documents from 1166 right up to the present with old and new records being added to the archive daily.
