Development Plan

In South Bedfordshire, the Development Plan currently consists of the Bedfordshire Structure Plan 2011 prepared by Bedfordshire County Council, and the South Bedfordshire Local Plan Review (Adopted January 2004) prepared by South Bedfordshire District Council. The Structure Plan provides the strategic framework within which the South Bedfordshire Local Plan Review is set and with which it has to conform.

The purpose of the Local Plan is to provide guidance on development and the use of land and buildings in the district and ensure a balance is struck between the need for development and the protection of the environment. The plan provides some certainty to land owners and developers as to what types of development will be permitted, and an indication to local residents of future changes. Development proposals submitted in the form of planning applications are judged against the policies and proposals contained in the plan and are used by the District Council in determining the application.

The current Local Plan for the district is the South Bedfordshire Local Plan Review, which was adopted in January 2004 and which rolls the Local Plan forward until 2011 (a full list of the documents that led to the adoption of the plan are available within the Document Archive).
