Shape Your Future
Shape Your Future Letter - May 2008 (PDF 73.4KB)
In 2003, the Government published 'Sustainable Communities: Building for the Future', setting out its intention to deliver a step change in developing new housing, jobs and infrastructure improvements. In particular, it set out the intention to rapidly increase the rate at which we build houses to improve the choice and affordability of homes for everyone. Four growth areas in the wider south-east were identified. One of them, the 'Milton Keynes and South Midlands Growth Area', includes Luton and South Bedfordshire. In 2005, a document called the Milton Keynes and South Midlands Sub-Regional Strategy (MKSMSRS) was published to provide more guidance on the growth for Luton and South Bedfordshire. The MKSMSRS can be found at (www.eera.gov.uk).
To manage this growth, South Bedfordshire District Council, Luton Borough Council and Bedfordshire County Council; along with key agencies and partners such as the Primary Care Trust, the Police, the education and the voluntary sector will be working closely together. There are two key documents that will set out a vision and future plans for the area, the first is the 'Sustainable Community Strategy' and the other is the 'Core Strategy'. The Issues and Options paper is the first stage in the statutory preparation process to produce the final Core Strategy and Key Diagram, which will set out our policies for managing and shaping development; identifying broad locations for significant new housing and employment growth (options for growth), transport infrastructure, open space and facilities to serve existing and new communities. Public consultation started on Saturday 30th June and ended on 26th October 2007.
Public consultation on the Core Strategy preferred options is scheduled to take place in Summer 2008.
There are big choices to be made and the more you are involved, the better we will understand what is important and how best to achieve it. Growth can bring great opportunities to make improvements to the quality of our towns, villages and countryside; through increased investment in facilities and infrastructure, so making sure we grow the right way is up to everyone.
